Toxicology Nurses / Poison Control Nurses work in poison control
centers providing phone triage to patients who may have ingested poison.
Toxicology Nurses provide many types of
services, such as:
• Gathers available information regarding the possible poisonous material, such as the type and quantity of the material consumed.
• Obtains information about the individual that has consumed the material, such as age, height, weight, and general health. • Assimilates this information, makes diagnostic decisions, and recommends
treatment.
• Strong troubleshooting and critical thinking skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Job Qualifications |
|
Most poison control centers will train their nurses on how to manage poison exposure situations. The training varies from state to state. In some states training last 3 months, while in others it can last up to one year.
Subjects taught in training include various diseases, pharmacology, toxicology of drugs and household products, handling of frantic callers and suicidal patients.
A nursing background in emergency room nursing or intensive care
nursing is most welcomed in this field. |

The CSPI must undergo recertification by reexamination every 7 years. |

AAPCC: The national agency which certifies
poison centers based on standardized criteria and administers a certification

centers. |
