Job Role: The main focus of this job role is to assess and evaluate the mental state and the mental/emotional needs of a psychiatric patient.
Provide
nursing care and treatments to many different patients with various types of
mental illness. Disorders such as: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, substance addiction and dementia.
Psych nurses work in many different types of work settings: mental
health facilities, hospitals, outpatient treatment centers, government agencies
and long-term care centers.
Nursing Skills: Perform crisis intervention in cases such
as suicide attempts and outbreaks of violent behavior. -Administer medication -Counsel patients and their families. -Monitor forms of treatments. -Keep detailed records of activities.
-Help patients deal with eating, bathing, and dressing.

Job Qualifications |
|
Psychiatric Nurses can be either LPNs (licensed practical
nurses), LVNs (licensed vocational nurses) or registered nurses (RNs) who hold
either an ASN Degree (Associates in Nursing), a BSN (Bachelor Degree in Nursing)
or a Diploma in Nursing (3 Year School). -Have a certain amount of on the job
experience working with psychiatric patients and psychiatric treatment modalities. -They must be prepared to work with individuals who are aggressive, disoriented, and uncooperative. -Physical stamina, emotional stability, patience, critical thinking, and good problem solving skills are essential characteristics. |

Certifications must be renewed every 5 years. Renewal applications are due at least 3 months before your certification expiration date.
