Geriatric Nursing is the specialty that concerns itself with the
provision of nursing care to geriatric or aged population. They can work in
nursing homes, hospitals or the home of the elderly.
Geriatric Nurses provide many types of
services, such as:
• Administer medication to patients. • Assist in medical procedures performed on patients.
• Must be mentally and emotionally prepared to deal with death and other
emotionally stressful situations.
• Caring for elder patients with acute and chronic conditions. •
Educate and support patients and their families.
• Strong troubleshooting and critical thinking skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Job Qualifications |
|
To practice geriatric nursing, you must first graduate from a an
accredited School of Nursing. Geriatric Nurses can practice with either an ASN
degree or BSN degree. Geri Nurses have additional education over and beyond that
of a general nurse, as caring for the elderly involves specific training.
There are three levels of geriatric nurse: gerontological nurse specialist, clinical nurse specialist and gerontological
nurse practitioner. Depending on the state of practice, varying types of
educational requirements will be mandated, but all three require you to be an RN
(Registered Nurse). But what makes a good Geriatric Nurse, is a
genuine desire to help the elderly. A sincere desire to work with the
aged. |
