|
First and foremost, the main focus of any correctional nurse, is
safety (use of universal precautions) due to the high rate of disease among the inmates. Prison populations often do have higher than the average rates of HIV, hepatitis, and tuberculosis among their inmates when compared with a patient population at an average hospital.
You will also do a lot of charting, passing of meds, insulin,
and vital signs. Assessment skills will become fine tuned in a correctional
setting as you will be constantly assessing patients to see if they require
being sent out for treatment. |

Job Qualifications |
|
To become a correctional nurse there are no special programs you
will need to take. Your RN or LPN education will be adequate to serve as a
correctional nurse.
Prison facilities do not require certification, but if you plan
to make your career in the field of corrections then it would be beneficial.
The CCHP designation identifies you as one who has demonstrated mastery of national standards and the knowledge expected of leaders working in the field of correctional health care.
